Mrs. Esther Mae Dixon Bass, 86 of Durham, NC, entered into eternal life on Wednesday, January 07, 2014.  Affectionately known as “Sis” or “Aunt Sis”, was born in Lenoir County on June 19, 1928 to the late Tabell Dixon and Queenie King Dixon.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Fred Bass, Jr.  She was retired as a domestic engineer.  Esther was a beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, grandmother, cousin and friend.

She was educated in the Pitt County Public schools.  While living in the Durham community, she enjoyed spending time with her family and acquaintances.  Her gift to the world was a “Gentle Humble Spirit”.  She had a deep affection for her husband, the late “Fred Bass Jr.”  They were inseparable.  Esther also had an “exceptional” love for God, her family, sisters, brothers and cousins which uplifted the hearts of many.

In addition to her husband and parents, Esther was preceded in death by her five brothers: William Dixon, Sr., Jesse Dixon Sr., Paul Dixon Sr., David Dixon Sr.; James Dixon, Sr. and several sister-in-laws.  

She leaves to cherish her memory, three sons; Troy L.Bass of Durham, NC; Lyndon R. Bass, Sr. (Mary) of Raleigh, NC; and Jimmie N. Bass of Durham, NC; daughter, Evelyn Bass-Durham (Lawrence) of Winston-Salem, NC; two step-daughters, Patricia E. Bass and Melba J. Bass of Durham, NC., two sisters; Mable L. Joyner and Verna B. Allen (Thomas) of Lagrange, NC; one sister-in-law; Sally Dixon; one brother-in-law, Robert Bass (Lillian) as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grand -children and friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 17, 2015at 12:00 Noon at Union Baptist Church, 904 N. Roxboro Street, Durham, NC 27701.  Visitation will begin at 11:30 AM Saturday.  

Viewing also at 10a.m. to 7p.m.; Thursday and Friday(01/15 – 01/16) at the funeral parlor.
